Directors Vision
My intention as director ‘Punk Mitzvah’ is authentically portray a slice of life into Jewish Girlhood through depicting humour and warmth within the neurotics of Jewish life. These aspects come from own upbringing in a Jewish family. My intent through Este’s story is to portray one perspective of what one young girl, being told she is about to become a woman under Jewish law, believes is her version of coming of age. At 13-years-old, a young, Jewish girl is on the cusp of puberty whilst also being told she is now a woman. Every girl’s vision of what she wants to look like when she’s considered ‘grown up’ varies. Este’s perspective is surprising, as it’s an idea that is often suppressed.

I want to make Punk Mitzvah an enjoyable, eye-opening film that is able to effectively portray its’ values through aesthetic, an enthralling story, complex characters and an all-sensory experience that allows us into the world of anxious barely-teenage girl.
